Today’s Speaker – Diana Trendt – UW-P Career Center
|
Diana Trendt is the Director of the Career Center at UW-P. She spoke to us about the upcoming Career Fair and how her folks assist students and alumni in their careers. She has worked there twice. The first time it was done with books and faxes, now it is all done online. It is challenging for some older alumni. The first thing is that this is a Career Fair, not a Job Fair. They do not guarantee job placement. It is not only for Seniors trying to get a job, but it is for Freshmen and Sophomores looking to understand what career choices are out there, what companies are available, etc. It gives alumni the chance to come back & see the changes and share stories of their career path. |
One of the top items Diana works on is Resume Development. They do cover letter critique and set up mock interviews. They set up workshops in business etiquette for interviews at meals and as business people to be hosts. Another area she works on with students is a Salary Negotiation Workshop. She said that November is National Career Development Month. They are hosting a luncheon event that is free for students and look to attract many businesses in the Dubuque area. They are hoping to sponsor another event in the spring for SW Wisconsin. |
The Career Fair is a 2 day event Sep 21 and Sep 22. It started as a 1 day event, expanded to 3 days during the hiring boom, then went back to 2 days. Day 1 is dedicated more toward Business, Ag, Communication & Liberal Arts. Day 2 is dedicated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math). The most interest is in STEM. They have the max number of employers (90) signed up for day 2. Most are repeat, but there are some new employers. The best item is the booklet they hand out to students with employer names, positions open, etc. Thanks for the wonderful speech! |
