Today’s Speaker – Jeremy Patnaude – Driftless Film Festival

Jeremy Patnaude is the owner of several theaters in the area, plus the Take 2 Restaurant. He spoke to us today about his passion to hold the Driftless Film Festival in the area. The web site should be fully functional in a couple weeks

He got the idea from the many film festivals in the Madison & Milwaukee area, plus his association with Nicholas Langholff. Nick produced a movie called “Madison”. They will show it at the Driftless Film Festival Oct 21 – 24, 2010. They intend to show it at the historic theaters in Platteville (Avalon), Mineral Point and Spring Green.

Jeremy said there are 3 results he wants from the Film Festival. First, it will bring independent (Indie) films to the area. Our area does not generally have the draw to have these smaller films. Second, it is a tourism draw. There are many folks who will come to a festival. They will bring folks who helped write, produce and act in the movies. One person is Mary Sweeney who wrote the film “Baraboo” among others. The third reason is Education. Each of the films will be shown in a historic venue. It will give them a chance to tell the history of the building. They will also have events throughout the year to give kids a chance to see jobs in Hollywood that are behind the camera.

He wants to hold a competition where High School and College students write a short script. The winning script will have their movie produced by professionals and shown as a feature at next year's festival.

Jeremy said that Darren Burrows, the actor who played Ed in Northern Exposure, is a big fan and has many of his fans excited about the festival. They hope to expand the festival in coming years to historic theaters in up to 8 cities, including the Blaine Theater in Boscobel, Turner Hall in Galena and the Al Ringling Theater in Baraboo.

He said one reason for the fall is because most festivals are in the spring & summer. Another reason is he hopes the festival will coincide with the fall colors. People will fall in love with our area when they travel the colorful countryside from one venue to the next.

Thanks for the wonderful speech!

PARTY IN THE PARK

Gary & Rhonda put together a wonderful event again. Thanks to the crews who helped distribute the hot dogs, milk and ice cream. We only had a few Hot Dog buns and 30 white milk left when all the hot dogs and ice cream were given away. Holly Feuling received the Volunteer of the Year award for our club. Well deserved!
