Today’s Speaker – Ken Kamps - History of the Platteville (Breakfast) Optimist Club
|
Here is a file photo of Ken Kamps, one of the Charter Members of our club. He has periodically given a talk on the history of the club to give us a sense of history of over 40 years of Optimism in Platteville. The last time he spoke was Sep 1, 2006. Ken said that in Fall of 1967 Lloyd Linden asked him to join a new club. The West Madison Club was our sponsor and came down over 20 times to help build the club. The Charter Banquet was in June 1968 with 35 members and 2 bus loads of members and guests from the West Madison Club. He said in fall of 1970 they were down to 15 members, but then picked up from there and George Louthain was the first Honor Club President in 1976. For the last few years we have been over 80 members. We have had 4 - 5 Lt. Governors and one Governor from our Club. |
They had a lot of different fundraisers since they started. They had garage sales, pizza, Packer Year books and they sold Note cards to repay a loan from the bank to fund the train at the Mining Museum. The first mention of Cheese Curds was in 1979 and we netted $400. Now we net over $12,000 every year from Cheese Curds. We also have 2 different CDs where we put money away in case Grant Co Fair and Dairy Days are washed out. He spoke about a few of the Youth Projects we have done. He noted that in the early years we had Respect for Law program the first week of May. They would do a Steak feed for police officers and families. Now our activities are limited to suport for the Police Explorers. He said that we have done the Bike Rodeo for over 30 years now. Chuck Thalmann used to own the Western Auto where Morrissey's is today. Chuck would work on the bikes to make sure they were in good working order. |
He spoke about social gatherings. He feels they had more in the early years, but Charlie has done a good job with the Fifth Friday socials. They would have Stag Night when the club was men only. He said Mystery Greeter started in 1973 as a result of an idea brought back from a District Conference. It started as 10 cents and with inflation grew to today's 50 cents. Ken talked about our attempts at New Club Building. The first time we tried Dodgeville it failed, but this last time with Jerry’s help they are going strong. We built a club in Lancaster, and at UW-P but both folded. Fennimore and now our Noon club are the recent successes. He also spoke about the many meeting places they have had, including moving 3 times in one year! They have met in Restaurants, private homes, the Student Center, the Country Club a couple different times, the Bowling Alley and now Take 2. He said the first place was at Steve's Pizza because Steve was a Charter Member. Thanks for the wonderful speech! |
