Today’s Speaker – Jack Luedtke – Platteville Main Street Program
|
This is Jack Luedtke. He took over as the Executive Director of the Main Street program about 8 weeks ago. He was born & raised in Dubuque, moved to Colorado and Wyoming where he worked in retail. He moved back to Illinois where he was the Executive VP for an Outdoor water feature firm. He retired, moved to Madison, and then moved to Platteville. He got bored in retirement and became the Main Street Manager. He still works with the Outdoor water features firm a little to help with non-profit work. When he was in Dubuque he was an Optimist. He wanted to thank the Optimists for their donations to support the Nutrition Program for Seniors with the Farmer’s Market. He said that there has been more demand from the beginning of the season to June than in all of 2009! |
He said this community is not unlike others with the politics. Jack thinks that with the change in Chancellor and the new opportunities from the recovery that we can take advantage of the ongoing Revitalization Study and move in a positive direction. He believes Platteville is at a tipping point. UW-P is the fastest growing campus in the UW System and the links to Main Street are there. He wants to solidify those ties. He said that the Main Street Board has a meeting with Chancellor Shields on August 2. He wants to work with PACCE and the University to establish a student run store on Main Street. It will give the students more experience in retail and add to the richness of Main Street. |
Jack looks forward to a new cafe starting up in August and the possibility of a ladies clothing store. He believes in working closely with the Chamber and the rest of the Community because Main Street is the heart of the community, but we need all the pieces working together to improve the quality of life in Platteville. One of the questions he got was – what is the most difficult challenge in promoting Main Street? He replied there are a number of challenges. One is financing – it is hard to get loans. Another is the historic nature of the buildings versus the space needs of modern retail. He hopes to bring a mix of businesses to Main Street. Thanks for the wonderful speech! |
