Today’s Speaker – Larry Trine - Platteville Area Tennis Association (PATA)

Here is Larry Trine. He is the President of the Platteville Area Tennis Association. He spoke to us about tennis in general and the new courts at Westview park in particular.

Platteville Area Tennis Association (PATA) formed last fall to support the efforts to rebuild the tennis courts at Westview Park. They supported Cindy Robles in her efforts to get a $23,000 grant from the US Tennis Association to construct a fourth court.

Larry cited statistics from USTA that those who play 3 hours per week cut their risk of death in half and score higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem. Court usage numbers showed that in 2009 they were used over 2000 hours.

The new courts are finished and Larry talked about the upcoming “Block Party” for the Grand Opening on July 24 from 11 – 2. There will be many activities, food and entertainment. There will be a Doubles Tournament with teams from the community.

He also gave a handout with some facility needs. He spoke about a backboard for people to practice with while waiting to play, benches, trash cans, but more importantly – a ball machine and retriever.

He said there is a shed on site that can be used to store these items. A good ball machine costs $2100 and a retriever is $400. He said rent receipts from the machines will be used for maintenance of the machines and the courts. He also spoke about the lights that are currently in the 2011 City budget.

Larry spoke about the “Get the Lead Out” race on the 17th. He said you can pledge on behalf of PATA. He said it is a lifetime sport. His father is still playing well in his 80's. As you get older it becomes a game of finesse not speed.

Thanks for the wonderful speech!
