FRIDAY, July 2, 2010 MEETING NOTES Volume 44, Issue 40

We had 20 Optimists & guests today. The only guest was our speaker. The Mystery Greeter was Dave Jones who greeted Ken Kamps. John Urness, John Dutcher, Beth Frieders, Milt Rewey, Gary Engelke and Ken Kamps wore their Optimist shirts today.

Today’s Speaker – Stefan Koehler - Pride in America

Here is Stefan Koehler. He came to America 8 years ago from Germany. He was a witness to the suffering under the East German rule. He brought us an uplifting perspective on being an American. He has been listed as one of the Emerging Leaders under 40 in Madison. He is a business executive for a biotech firm in the Madison area.

Stefan started out by pretending to talk to his family about some of his adventures. He said there was no translation for him buying a “Pickup Truck” on E-Bay in Texas. He spoke about how on his return trip stopped at a County Fair in southern IL and watched a “Demolition Derby”.

He went “Ice Fishing”, caught a 37” pike and had to throw it back because it was too small! He talked about the beautiful women here as well. He said that if Arnold could be the Governor of Claifornia, he could be Governor of Wisconsin!

He spoke about how America was and still is the Land of Freedom & Opportunity. American also brings freedom to others, such as Germany. He saw a documentary of President John F. Kennedy with his “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. He said his father escaped from East Germany and explained to young Stefan how the guards in the watchtowers along the Wall were there to kill people trying to escape.

During an exchange program he was able to see his father & uncle hug for the first time in 30 years. They tasted East German beer and it was awful! Something must be wrong when Germans cannot make good beer!

Stefan related his experiences when President Reagan called on Gorbachev to “tear down this Wall!” He was in college in 1989 when he received a package in the mail with a small piece of concrete in it – his own piece of the Berlin Wall.

He loves the Freedom of Speech and won a Toastmaster Award. He received his Green Card in 2007 and can apply for permanent citizenship after 5 years. Prior to 2007 he was sponsored on a Work Visa. That meant if he lost his job, he would be deported. Now he is eligible to stay regardless of his job.

Thanks for the wonderful speech!
