Today’s Speakers Janet Kowalski, Ronna Monahan & Laurie Richardson – Make A Wish Foundation
|
From left to right are Janet Kowalski, Ronna Monahan and Laurie Richardson. They are volunteers for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They told us about the origins of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 1980 Officer Tom Austin made a wish come true for Chris Greicius – a little boy who wanted to be a police officer. Officer Austin planned a full day for Chris, got a tailored police uniform and had the boy named an Honorary Officer. Chris died shortly thereafter and was buried in his police uniform with full honors. |
The Wisconsin chapter was founded in 1984 and has served over 3500 families. In 2008 alone, there were 276 wishes granted. They said that the criteria are that a child must be between 2˝ and 18 years old, a resident of WI, referred by parent or caregiver, have had no other wishes granted and meet certain medical criteria. No child is turned down if medically eligible. There is no cost to the families and the average cost is $9,000. Each of our speakers is a volunteer. Ronna is working with the family of a 15 year old girl who has had 2 kidney transplants. She wants to be a model in Seventeen Magazine. Ronna got involved after her daughter received a wish. |
Janet is working with a 6 year old boy. He wants to go to Disney World. He is non-verbal & it makes things hard. They need to set it up so his special equipment is available during the trip. Laurie is working with a 4 year old girl who has a kidney tumor. She also wants to go to Disney World. Unfortunately, Laurie has not had her initial meeting due to medical issues. The volunteers get kids in a 90 mile radius and have 24 hours from the time they are called to accept or turn down the assignment. One incorrect assumption is that a child must be terminally ill. The condition must be life-threatening, but many children who have received wishes have recovered. The child can be referred by a parent or care giver. Thanks for the wonderful speech! |

FREIKERAmy Seeboth was at the Board Meeting. The Platteville Area (Noon) Club donated $100 and challenged the other service clubs to match it. Amy says that with the Area club’s donation, they are $400 short. The Board recommended that this be a one-time donation of $100 and if Amy is unsuccessful in getting funding from the other service clubs, then we would pay up to the $400 deficit.
