Today’s Speaker – Howard Crofoot - Roundabouts

Club Member and Director of Public Works Howard Crofoot spoke about the projects for this summer and specifically roundabouts.

2010 projects are as follows:

Elm Street - from Dewey to Elmer. It begins on April 26 and should be complete in July. It will replace water, sewer, storm sewer, sidewalk and street.

Staley Ave – from Bus 151 to Harrison. It begins in early May and ends in mid August. It will replace water, sewer, storm sewer and street. It will smooth the hump at Richard St.

Chestnut & Markee – from Bus 151 to Southwest Road. The groundbreaking is on May 10 at 4:00 p.m. near the current bridge. It realigns the road to make a new, direct route to UW-P.

It replaces water, sewer, storm sewer, the bridge and street. There will be a roundabout to connect the new road and the existing Chestnut St.

Greenwood Ave – from College Drive to the UW-P Physical Plant and from Hickory to Bradford. This will replace water, storm sewer and street. It will be done with Madison Street. Madison Street – from Second to Fourth. This will install water, storm sewer and replace the street. It will start after school is over and be finished before the fall semester.

Furnace St – from Chestnut to Water. It will begin after July 4 and end in October. It will replace water, sewer, storm sewer, sidewalk & street. It is coordinated with the PD project to happen after most of the heavy equipment is installed.

Philips Road – from Bus 151 to the south end. This will replace storm sewer and street. It will begin in June and end in August. It will be coordinated with HyPro to minimize disruption.

The Chestnut/Markee project will be our first roundabout. Another is planned at Water & Madison for the 2012 Water St project. There is information on the DOT website on how to drive in a roundabout. Our roundabouts will be single lane only. It will be less confusing. As you approach the roundabout, slow down, yield to pedestrians and bikes. Yield to vehicles on the left in the roundabout and enter when safe. Go around, signal a right turn as you near the exit, yield to pedestrians and bikes as you exit.
