Today’s Speakers - Cindy Callahan & PHS Forensics Team
|
From left to right are Phoebe Moore, Cindy Callahan, Alyssa Zasada, David Hahn, Brianna Murphy and Tiffany Lange. Cindy Callahan is an English teacher at the High School and is the advisor and coach for the Forensics team. She brought members of the team to share 3 events that are going to State level competition. Click here for a photo collage of the events that morning by John Dutcher. David Hahn gave a most entertaining demonstration speech on juggling. He juggled soft balls, rings, pins and managed to show us juggling from standing position to converting to juggling while on his back! Interesting tidbits he offered: juggling was discovered over 4,000 years ago – and was originally done for religious and witchcraft reasons; it occurred in Egyptian times, then Middle Ages, and then jugglers eventually became entertainment to assist poets before royalty. He said juggling works well for being a stress reliever, a confidence builder and a money maker! David had the Optimist crowd cracked up juggling his comedy between his demo’s. |
The next event was Group Interpretation of the story “The Gingerbread Girl” performed by Alyssa Zasada, Brianna Moore and Tiffany Lange. The girls had many wonderful characters to portray with their voices and gestures, while reading their script. The story was about the Gingerbread girl, who outran and escaped the elderly couple who baked her, some farmers, a pig, an artist, a cow, 3 dogs and their walker, kids and teachers on a playground, and eventually the fox who had previously eaten her brother. The happy ending included her befriending the fox and rehabilitating him, and returning home to bake more gingerbread cookies for the elderly couple. |
The last event was Storytelling by Phoebe Moore. In her event she has to memorize 4 stories and do whichever one is chosen for her to do. She must tell the story from a chair, as if she’s presenting to young children. Phoebe gave a great animated telling of “The Beginning of the Armadillo” by Rudyard Kipling—a clever tale about a not-so-clever baby jaguar who is learning to hunt from his mother and differentiate between a tortoise and a hedgehog, who manage to outsmart him repeatedly for fun. In the end, the tortoise and hedgehog learn to imitate one another and while the hedgehog becomes smoother and learns to swim, the tortoise stretches his back plates and learns to curl up. End result? A clever armadillo of course! Thanks for the wonderful speeches and demonstration! |
