FRIDAY, March 12, 2010 MEETING NOTES Volume 44, Issue 24

We had 26 Optimists & guests today. Our guests were the speakers and their parents, plus the judges. The Mystery Greeter was Milt Rewey who greeted Howard Crofoot. John Dutcher, John Urness, Tom Nall, Hap Daus, Gary & Eileen Engelke, Steve & Maxine Lane, Jerry Schewe, Holly Cook, Virg Pufahl, Diane Van Natta, Ernie Thalmann and Charlie Clark wore their Optimist shirts today.

Today’s Speakers – Oratorical Contestants

We held the combined Oratorical Contest for the Platteville and Platteville Area clubs today at our meeting. Here are the 3 contestants – Saafia Masoom, Angela Drefcinski and Sumaia Masoom. Sisters Saafia and Sumaia are back again. This is Angela’s first time.

Holly Cook and Emily Doan were the chairpersons from our club and the Platteville Area club respectively. The judges were Carolyn Schuler, Tiffany Hess and Ginny Berg. Thanks for your help in judging 3 wonderful speeches.

The topic was Cybercommunication – Progress or Problem? Each speaker had her own take on this. One ended with “the Internet is progress, progress, progress.” Another spoke about the good things from sharing photos with family, but lamented, “Do we need to tell everyone?” Another thought of the Internet as the “Town Square of tomorrow.”

It is very refreshing to hear the point of view of the three students. They see the good in hearing about the real situation in Iran or donating money to Haiti. They see the bad in cyberbullying or texting while driving.

One quoted a twisted saying “Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Give them the Internet and they won’t bother you for weeks!”

One mentioned that Myspace and Facebook started in 2003 and 2004 originally for college students, but now everyone uses them. She said that this is a “force that changed our world for the better.”

Thanks for the wonderful speeches and good luck at the next level!
