Today’s Speakers – Coach Jeff Gard & 4 Seniors – UW-P Men’s Basketball
|
Here are Coach Gard and 4 of his 5 seniors. We have Connor Finley, Curt Hanson, Andrew Brown, and Mike Shaw. Coach Gard said that Alan Baldwin is student teaching in Dodgeville. Jeff Gard is the 13th Coach of the Pioneers. He is the only one who was a first year coach with 13 wins. He is a UW-P graduate and was an assistant coach under Paul Combs, first at Lakeland, then for 5 years before he was selected to replace Paul Combs. He said that it is unusual how well the City and University work together. |
He said they are honoring the 5 seniors. It is unfortunate that Alan could not be here. He has a 4.0 average. Connor is from Serena, IL and is in Business Administration. Mike Shaw is from Madison and is in HR; Curt Hanson is from Deerfield, IL and is a Phys Ed major. Andrew Brown is from Janesville and is also a Phys Ed major. He also credits the success of the team to the tough workouts and the scout team. Andrew said thanks for the breakfast and the opportunities. He says these guys are his best friends. Mike said that they are best friends. They live and play together. The trips are the best memories. |
Curt says that he is always asked why here and where is Platteville by his friends back home. He loves the support from his friends and the town. Connor said he is from a place smaller than Cobb. He got a warm welcome by all here and thanked us for the support on and off the court. There were questions about jobs. Most have jobs lined up or are doing student teaching in a future semester. They explained how they help with recruiting. They spend time with the players to get to know their future teammates. As they said, they do not “sacrifice character for talent”. Thanks for the wonderful speech! |
