Today’s Speaker – OI Internet Safety Program
|
Here is President Tom Nall next to the DVD of OI President Mark Shriver. Mark opened the DVD on the new OI Internet Safety Program. This is to inform Optimists on the overall problem and how we can help. They spoke about “Andy” and his digital dossier. It began with E-mails from elated parents to prospective Grandparents saying “We’re Pregnant”, to a sonogram in the Hospital records with copies sent to family members. All of “Andy’s” key moments in life from birth, first steps, first use of the Internet, friends on Facebook, etc. make new entries in this dossier. |
Information from phone GPS, credit card and online purchases, surveillance cameras add even more information. It starts all over again when “Andy” marries and has “Andy, Jr.” all the way to “Andy’s” funeral. The intent of this program is to develop new generations of Internet users who are Ethical, Responsible and Resilient. Ethical users treat each other with respect. No hacking, bullying or other poor choices. Responsible users report abuse, predators, cyberbullying, etc. Resilient users know how to deal with ID Theft, harassment, etc. Statistics show 1 in 6 people will be victims of ID Theft in their lifetime. There were stories of 2 young people. Alex went to a party and a photo of him involved with underage drinking led to revocation of a baseball scholarship. Kevin worked hard to build a good online reputation and blog. A company hired him based on his blog and reputation on line. |
Our intent is to work with parents, PTA, childcare providers to know what is going on. www.ikeepsafe.org at 1-800 500-8130 has materials to help. The things we want parents to “keep” are: Current, Communicating and Checking. Keep "current" with technology and the social sites. Let the kids help teach you. Keep "communicating" with the kids because many are afraid to tell parents. Keep "checking" by installing filters and monitors. Tell the kids which sites and activities are not acceptable. Tom would like some volunteers to form a Committee to work with other groups to reach kids and parents. We think the target groups should be childcare providers, PTA, etc. Maybe we can collaborate with the Platteville Area club. One suggestion is to have information available at things like Tri-Star Basketball, Bike Safety Rodeo and Party in the Park. Thanks for sharing this info! |
