FRIDAY, April 17, 2009 MEETING NOTES Volume 43, Issue 29

We had 16 Optimists today. The Mystery Greeter was Arnie Roper who greeted Gary Engelke. John Dutcher, Gary & Eileen Engelke, and Hap Daus wore their Optimist shirts today.

Today’s Speaker - Dave Jones - Hall of Fame Softball Coach

Our own Dave Jones spoke about his years playing & coaching softball. He is holding the second glove he ever owned.

Dave started playing in 1954. He & Phil Karrmann would play on a field where the pool is now. When many of the other league players were in the National Guard on 2 weeks training, they asked Phil & Dave to play. Dave’s dad did NOT want him to catch, but when the other catcher was injured, Dave got to play.

Dave said he didn’t play baseball in High School; he was on the track team. He played fast pitch softball in the summer.

In 1960 he started working at Mound City bank. They sponsored softball for many years. In 1963 he was drafted & played on the Ft Lewis, WA team. Over the years as a pitcher, Dave racked up 368 wins! Dave said one highlight of his career was playing & beating Eddie Feighner - "The King & his Court" twice in Platteville.

In 1983, Jim McIntire asked him to coach HS softball. He said as long as he got "yes" from 2 places, Mary Lou & the bank. Well, for 25 years, Mary Lou said yes. She coached with him and over the years they had great success with winning about 60% of the games. For him there was a lot of time involved - almost a second career.

Dave said that he has had a lot of fun times and many honors. He helped start the WI State Fastpitch Softball Coaches Assn. He was the President and started many things. He & Mary Lou were inducted into the initial class of the Coaches’ Hall of Fame.

He is spending time helping Heather Townsend with the UW-P softball team and watching his son Greg rack up wins at Winona St. They are a nationally ranked team this year. Last year they went 33 - 8. When his son was a coach of the Monroe HS softball team, he got to coach against him. Dave told a story about how during one of these games Greg argued with the umpire and "Mom" escorted him back to his dugout.

Thanks for the wonderful speech!
