Dick Schumacher was here to talk about the Books for Babies program. We started the program last Optimist year in conjunction with the Hospital and the Library. They started with 200 books and have about 30 left. The Library helps figure out which books are appropriate for reading to babies and acts as the agent to buy the books at discount prices. Dick & Jean write letters explaining the program to the parents. The idea is to have the parents start reading to the child as early and often as possible. There is a list of other books recommended by the Library for additional reading. The Hospital provides the books to the parents of each newborn. |
They help us get around the privacy issues by having Hospital staff work with the parents. This year Dick brought 2 books, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear" and "The Eye Book" for consideration. They proposed a budget of nearly $700 for "The Eye Book" and miscellaneous supplies, instead of nearly $1,000 for the other book. Jerry Schewe made a motion to approve funding for "The Eye Book", with Dave Jones seconding the motion. All in favor said "Eye". Wayne Wodarz explained the Pizza Sales drive as another fundraiser. We normally get between $1000 and $1200 from it to supplement our Cheese Curd funds. |
They are proposing to hold a "taste test" at a Noon meeting - details to be announced. Hap came up with a proposal to have the curd trailer mounted on a flat bed trailer, like a hayrack. The frame would be sturdier than the current trailer and we could jack the main portion of the trailer on & off the hayrack. This way people can get in/out of the trailer easier, the people in front don't have to reach up for the curd cups, etc. With a sturdier trailer, taking it on the road is less stressful. Another option is bigger tires and creating a wheel well in the trailer. Think about it & let Hap or Gary know what you think. Any action will be after Dairy Days. |
