FRIDAY, August 12, 2005 MEETING NOTES Volume 39, Issue 44

We had 24 Optimists and guests for our meeting. We had a visit from 3 members from the Dodgeville club; President Terry Fischer, VP Brian Dahlstrom and Sec. Lynnea Lauffer. The Mystery Greeter was Arnie Roper who greeted Eileen Engelke. John Dutcher, Charlie Clark, Arnie Roper, Gary & Eileen Engelke, Megan Graney, Angela Udelhofen, and Ken Kamps had Optimist shirts on. Thanks to VP Angela for filling in while Jim is away.

Today's Speaker - Mark Molesworth - UW-P Athletics

Mark Molesworth has been the Athletic director for 9 years now. He is very proud of the student athletes at UW-P. 178 of 367 intercollegiate athletes last year had a GPA of 3.0 or better. This is the 5th year in a row where the Athlete GPA is higher than the University at-large. It is a testament to the focus of the students and the programs available under the coaching staff.

Mark spoke about the "war zone" of construction on campus. The Stadium renovation is to be complete this weekend.

The Residence Hall project at the old track location is progressing. Next week they will start the new track on the soccer practice field. In September they will install lights on the softball field and convert the second field into a baseball field. All of the new facilities are funded through Student Fees, NOT State tax dollars. The other work is paid by TSI dollars. He thanks the Chancellor for his assistance in getting creative funding sources to support sports on campus.

He believes the new facilities will be a showcase for the campus and assist in recruiting not only athletes, but also regular students.

They can use the facilities for club and intramural sports opening it up for many more students to use.

Mark works out daily just by lifting the NCAA Division III and WIAC manuals. One of his first tasks at the start of any season is to explain the rules to the athletes and have them sign a 4 page Code of Conduct, among other things. They have everything from Banned Substances to recruiting restrictions to season rules. One rule is that athletes must get one day off per week.

Thank you for the interesting speech!
