Today's Speaker - Officer Andrea Hoernke - Amber Alert
|
Officer Andrea Hoernke of the Platteville PD spoke to us today about Amber Alerts and missing children. She has been on the force for 4 years now and is on Special Assignment. One of her jobs is to help write the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for missing kids. The first thing is prevention. She recommends talking openly to kids, but not using "scare tactics". Scare tactics can backfire by causing fear paralysis. She says to talk about how to get out of a situation that doesn't seem right. |
It is better to be safe and apologize later than to be a polite victim. Don't forget older kids also. The second thing is Internet safety. Andrea says to establish rules. One is no personal information online. Many folks are not who they seem to be online. Don't confide in Internet friends. Tell someone about inappropriate messages and don't meet someone you met online. The third thing is "What if" the worst happens and the child is missing. First, act immediately and search the home or area where last seen. Include all unlikely places because kids can hide in small places. Contact a store manager, if in a store. Contact local police, THEN call friends. |
The police will need a physical description, where last seen and by whom. Photos are a plus. Any medical info, like diabetes, is helpful. The police will respond to your location, search the area with you, report child to other agencies and inform supervisors. An Amber Alert will be given if the supervisor thinks it will be effective for a child 17 or younger, in life threatening situation and they have descriptive info of the child and car. We have 1 a week reported missing, but most of those are runaways. Thank you for the interesting speech! |
